Rainy Day and Market Thursday

This morning after dropping off our laundry at the local Laundromat for the fold and go service, we went to the Lunenburg market.   We thought it was an unusual day to have a market - being Thursday morning...but there were lots of cars in the parking lot when we arrived about 10:00.  It only goes from 8:00 to 12:00 and already there were people who were sold out and definite gaps in other stalls.

 

Mostly there were fresh vegetables and fish for sale, but there were a few local crafts represented there.  We wandered around for about half an hour admiring the wares.  It certainly was well attended by locals and tourists alike.  We bought some very delicious cookies to have with our coffee later.

We drove to Mahone Bay and had a walkabout there.  Lots of little stores to pop in an out of.  We bought some delicious fudge at one of the stores.  Even though it was raining, it was too warm to wear a jacket.  Looks as though the weather should clear tomorrow as we are driving on our way to Charlottetown.  We have a ferry reservation for 1:00 and it is a 3 hour drive from Lunenburg, so we will be up and out early.
 

Here is a picture of the Inn we are staying at, The Arborview Inn.  This 107 year old house is over 5000 square feet and 10 bedrooms although she is only licensed to rent 4 for the B&B.  I guess if there is one drawback to staying at a Bed and Breakfast, it is that you are mostly on the 2nd floor - so you are up and down with luggage....but the breakfasts are definitely worth it!

 

For something to do, we drove to East Lahave to catch the little cable ferry that crosses a small inlet to Lahave which boasts a wonderful bakery and a craft market co-op  It was still raining pretty hard but not at all cold out.  We were on the ferry with only 5 other cars - It costs $5.50 for the 5 minute crossing, but thanks to our host at the inn, she loaned us a punch card so we crossed for free - Thanks Cindy!

We went for lunch at the highly recommended Lahave Bakery and were not disappointed.  Before we were even inside the door, the smells emanating from the bakery were filling our senses.  Our lunch was well worth the 5 minute ferry ride to get there.  As an added bonus, it was a great thing to do on a rainy day.  On a busy day, (i.e., not rainy) the bakery bakes about 400 loaves of bread  and 38 dozen buns – but today being a bit slower, only 280 loaves or so. Can you imagine? And all in a very small kitchen with 2 ovens with 4 racks each.  But they must be doing something right as they are always busy and well known in the area. 
 

We took the ferry back and then to the inn for the rest of a great afternoon.  The rain has stopped now and the humidity is not so pervasive.  Just a nice quiet time to read and to get my writing done.

For dinner tonight we tried The Fish Factory – so many great restaurants in such a small town.  Eileen and I had scallops, Tom had calamari and Shannon had fish and chips – we all agreed that it was an excellent meal.  It looks as though the weather is clearing a welcome change for the local shops and restaurants … should be pleasant for our drive tomorrow.
