Our taxi came to pick us up at
6:00 and then we were on our way. After
an easy ride to the airport we were pleased to see that our flight was on time. Interesting – there were no TV’s on the plane
but one could rent tablets preloaded with movies for $5.00 and if you have your
own earphones – even better. I should
have played with my tablet more before I left for this trip and downloaded some
games and some movies from Netflix.
Perhaps when we have our stop in Toronto I can get some for the next leg
of the journey. So with nothing else to
do on the flight I thought I would write.
The weather was perfect for
flying today. Looking ahead…if the
prognosticator has prognosticated decorously, we should have many sunny and
warm days to explore this unique part of Canada. For the first 5 nights, we will stay at A
Schooner Inn ( www.aschoonerinn.com )
in Saint John’s Nfld. We have been
peeking in at their Facebook page of the same name for the last few weeks and
it seems a great place to start.
For the Newfoundland portion of
this trip we would like to see the Capelin
roll in. These small herring like
fish come in on the waves and as the water recedes, they flip flop on shore
while people madly scramble to pick them up and fill their buckets. I would love to be able to participate in
this activity even if I only catch and release. Ice Bergs – might be too
late, but there were a record number this year so maybe... Light Houses
– I don’t think we will have any trouble finding those! Places
with Funny Names – this is Newfoundland and places were named by
Newfoundlanders so there will be no shortage of those. Cape Spear – the eastern most part of Canada… Signal Hill – something about a signal I guess Newfoundland
Dogs – at least a few I hope. Lobster and Cod – a couple of feeds of each
please! East Coast Trail – Trail begins at Cape St. Francis in Pouch Cove, a 20 minute drive north of St. John's. From there the trail heads south for 265km to Cappahayden on the southern shore. There are several different hikes and some are easy....I think this has to be on our list!
So it will be interesting and
fun. Sharing this adventure with my
sister, brother-in-law and my niece makes this holiday very special
indeed. Stay tuned….
