Driving today all
around harbour main and then up near conception bay following the coast. We are heading for Cupids, Spread Eagle,
Dildo and Heart’s Content – I am sensing a theme here… Very green and lush and similar vegetation to
the west coast. Lots of beautiful
lupines – I think they should have lupines as their provincial flower as they
are prolific and beautiful. I haven’t seen their provincial flower the picture
plant yet. Although I learned they only grow in boggy areas and we aren't near any of those.
Had a walkabout
at Cupids – lovely little spot – known as being the first English settlement in
Newfoundland. The heritage centre indicated
that knitting and rug hooking are big crafts here. I think these are perfect crafts to keep
yourself busy during those long cold snowy winters.
We continued up
around Port de Grave and enjoyed just looking from the car. No trouble getting waterfront property
anywhere in Newfoundland. Beautiful
views are everywhere. Noteworthy of
Harbour Grace, another stop along the way, is that this is the spot where
Amelia Ehrhart left on her solo flight to cross the Atlantic in 1932. The plane is not hers, this just celebrates the role that Heart's Content played in aviation history. They were having a bit of a music fest with
some crafts and face painting – there was even a book signing going on. We spent a bit of money, took some pictures,
had ice cream and moved on to the next stop.
Today is another lovely day – who knew you could come to Newfoundland
and get a tan!
Finally here’s what you have been waiting for we are on our way to Heart’s Content to take a picture of the lighthouse and then down the road to Heart’s Desire and wouldn’t you know coming up on the right is Heart’s Delight. Although we looked hard, we never found Spread Eagle, but Dildo was right there in front of our nose just past Shag Rock and Backside Pond. And this photo essay of Dildo would not be complete without a trip to the Dildo Interpretation Centre....
So with the all
important photo taken of the post office, we were on our way to Skipper Bens for a wonderful
seafood dinner. Skipper Bens serves a
pre-set 3 course dinner. Tonight the
choices are pan fried cod or lemon dill chicken with salad and cheesecake for
dessert. Sounds great and a lovely end
to our pretty amazing day.
This is one of the beautiful lighthouses in Newfoundland - this is the one at Heart's Delight. We took this picture before we got close to Dildo when everything went wrong!
And now for the final pictures that are the reason for the title of this blog. Two things I thought I would never see in Newfound land....a train and a freighter!
Going to Topsail United Church tomorrow where all the extended family are buried. Talk to you then!

Your blog is wonderful as usual!! Makes me want to be there. Those "jelly bean" houses are the Canadian version of the Painted Ladies of San Francisco and IMHO outshine them!
Sounds and looks fabulous!! Say Hi to the relatives for me!! - Sandra
